The Coliseum

by estory

This stadium of all stadiums, raised
At the center of every city on Earth,
Dedicated to the loud excitements
Of spectators and spectacle, contest,
Mortal combat; a temple, almost,
In timeless granite, to our bloodthirsty
Hunger for triumph and trajedgy.
The faded drops of blood on the cold stone,
The crumbled chambers still holding the bones
Where corpses dropped under those grim arches,
Dissolve like the echoes of applause
That once sounded among these ancient benches.

Something at once strange, and yet familiar,
Ending in an awed, eerie silence.

In keeping with the "ruins" theme of this collection, The Coliseum uses this image of the decaying coliseum in Rome to symbolize something of a ruin in mankind; this obsession with spectacle and even pain and violence. I think the inhabitants of ancient Rome would have felt quite at home watching television today. The news and media harp on it; of course, they make a mint off of it. I once spent quite a lot of energy supporting sports teams, but the indecent amount of money people get paid to play these games is beyond me now. Gambling was the last straw. I think there are more important things in life than who wins the Superbowl or the World Series, or who is a quarter second faster in the 50 yard dash. estory
