My Cat

by Deborah Dybowski

"Mister, do you know where my mommy is?"

"No, Darlin. I don't know your mommy."

"Well, she's tall and her hair is long and black. She has on a green dress and she has
a broken leg because she fell over my cat when she wasn't looking. It really wasn't my
fault. I was watching my cat but my mommy wasn't watching. So, now my cat has
to find a new home because my mommy said my cat is a nuisance and someday somebody
is going to get hurt bad all because of my cat. So, Mister, would you take care of my cat
if mommy says I can't keep him?"

I might be able to take care of your cat but I think I see your mommy coming. I see a
lady with a bad leg."

"Mommy! This man said he can keep Smokey so you won't get hurt again falling over
him."

"Rebecca, what have I told you about talking to strangers?"

"Ma'am, I'm Rusty. Your daughter and I have become friends. I'd be happy to keep
your cat so you don't have any more incidents."

"Sir, I'm quite capable of taking care of our cat, Smokey. Come on, Rebecca. We're
late."

"Bye, Mister."

"Bye, Rebecca and Ma'am watch out. There's a dog behind you."
