Poem to delight a child

The I Do Not Want to Song

by Verna Cole Mitchell

I do not want to go to bed,
Go to bed,
Go to bed.
I do not want to go to bed.
I want to play instead.

I do not want to eat my peas,
Eat my peas,
Eat my peas.
I do not want to eat my peas.
I want some ice-cream, please.

I do not want to sit and stay
Sit and stay,
Sit and stay.
I do not want to sit and stay,
But run and jump and play.
. . . . .
I do not want to act real bad,
Act real bad,
Act real bad.
I do not want to act real bad.
It makes my parents sad.

So I will try to be real good,
Be real good,
Be real good,
I will try to be real good
Because I know I should.
