A chapter in the book 2024 Gypsy's Free Verse
Golden Fields & Ripe Grape Vines
by Gypsy Blue Rose
Poem is about the Spanish Civil War
in our country blood rushes through the rivers
come with me the night will follow
country men and women suffer and their pain is mine
I don’t know them but they call my name from the trenches
they ask me come our battle is almost won
they’re the ones I love who work in golden wheat fields and pick the ripe grapes from the vines
the fight will be hard but I will be by their side

The Spanish Civil War was fought from 1936 to 1939 between the Republicans and the Nationalists. Republicans were left-leaning socialist, communist, anarchist, and republican parties, which opposed the government in the pre-war period. The opposing Nationalists were monarchists, conservatives, and traditionalists led by a fascist General Francisco Franco. The conservatives won and Franco was in power until he died in 1975.
