Three older men, all horse-owners, discussed the best time to exercise their yearlings.
“First thing in the morning is best,” one said.
“Nope. Just before supper, late afternoon,” declared the second man.
The third man listened, then he drawled, “I reckon the best time is when the horse is awake.”

A yearling is a young horse--any colt (male) or filly (female) between one and two years of age. Sometimes yearlings are slightly younger than a year old if they are involved in racing.
