Independence Day, July 4, 1776

I wish I could have signed that day

the wonderful decree

declaring thirteen colonies

were free from tyranny.

If I had been a delegate

from Georgia, Delaware,

I would have proudly signed my name

like Hancock with great flair.

I wish I could have been there when

those gentlemen of note—

John Adams, Franklin, Jefferson—

presented what they wrote.

That Continental Congress heard

them give the reasons why

'twas time to part from England’s rule

and bid King George goodbye.

If I had stood within that hall

when that old bell was rung,

“We’re free!  We’re free!  We’re really free!”

I gladly would have sung.
