cruel dark smoke rises
from gas chambers' chimneys— as souls ascend to heaven leaving barren fields and river of tears behind |
JISEI is a DEATH POEM - a genre of poetry developed in Japan. They tend to offer a reflection on death and a meaningful observation of life. It originates in Zen Buddhism. The poem's structure can be written in haiku 5/7/5 (17 syllables or less) or tanka 5/7/5/7/7 (31 syllables or less) forms. Death poems are typically emotional. Death is described metaphorically, with references such as barren fields and smoke. They tend to be dark. wikipedia
