Excellent
Not yet exceptional. When the exceptional rating is reached this is highlighted
A fun blend of friends and frustrations.

Hobby? Nay! Addiction, I Say!

by Reese Turner

“Hobby” is one word to label my sport,
“Bad Habit”, perhaps more apropos…
“Addiction” would not be too far off
Given me and many others I know.

It is only a game, after all, silly at that,
A game played outside in cold or heat
With small little balls which often hide
Or sink, thus leading to player’s defeat.

Grown men actually walk or ride carts
Carrying large bags filled with sticks
With which to strike those small balls
We guess distance needs, then one picks.

Next, there’s a “green” on which, is a hole,
And the goal is to putt the ball overground
(Which is imperfect, slanted and grainy)
With purpose to get ball in the hole down.

Currency is often bet on scores and I
Have won a few but I have lost more
By contrast to most other endeavors
Golf’s winners have the LOWEST score.

Yet, I return often for more abuse by
The skills of golfers where I play.
Still, it’s a game of laughter and beer
So, I love the game more each day.

At the bottom line, golf’s no hobby;
It is an illness, a bloody waste of time!
Yet, I am trapped, forever to play this
Game I love. ‘Tis truly my  hobby sublime.

Indeed, wet and cold, that is me
On a favorite course by the sea
On Ireland's West coast, Tralee.

BTW, I once asked my preacher if he thought there would be golf in Heaven?
"Absolutely NOT!, he replied.
"Why not", I inquired, "I thought Heaven was a perfect place."
"My point exactly", he said.
Pays one point and 2 member cents.
