Those were the days of growth

Toast Anyone?

by Claire Tennant

I did a bit of singing,
I was never off-key
the inner instrument played
but did not develop me
an invitation came my way
though my sibling was involved
I joined the mob anyway
shyness problem solved

Making friends was easy
we were one-of-a-kind
regardless of age difference
there was a goal in mind
to speak effectively
to compete and learn
to communicate incessantly
without being stern

I suddenly discovered
I indeed had a choice
the hobby trained me
to use my eloquent voice
in employment, friendship
or church scenes
even someone for whom I cared
but marriage was not his dream

No longer involved with that hobby
nothing ever took its place
but standing up to be counted
wins every race
it could never have been achieved
just with help from the pastor
I remember fondly of the days
when I was a Toastmaster
