Scylla and Charybdis, I think, were, in Greek myth, the twin perils guarding the gates of Hell. One, I believe, was a whirlpool, the other some kind of fearsome mythical beast. Some say they were terms applied to the narrow passage leading from the Atlantic Ocean into the Mediterranean Sea, also referred to as the Pillars of Hercules. If anyone bothers to check this out and discovers I*m delusional, well done, and I*ll take it on the chin.
