Gold

by estory

What once passed for gold-
American eagles, Tiffany lamps,
Cadillacs-

Lies scattered across thrift stores,
Flea markets and junkyards
Now

And in their place are cryptocurrencies,
Imogees, tweets
And non fungible tokens.

In time these things too
Will fade away like out of fashion blue jeans

And the skateboards and tattoos
Will become the frisbees and slinkies,
The Woolworth's of tomorrow.

For some strange reason
We can't seem to stay in one place
And we keep picking up and leaving
For some unnamed corner of the map,

Off to frontiers and outposts
Beyond the edge of the horizon.

Places from which there is no return.

A Milestone Post

There is a bit of nostalgia to this poem, a longing for the things that once seemed to make life so colorful and memorable, as they are lost or swallowed up by the new sense of fashion and what is popular that sweeps through society. I guess each generation has gutted the things that were dear to the generation that came before; baroque music gave way to the waltz, the waltz gave way to jazz, jazz gave way to rock and roll and that gave way to disco and hip hop. Meisen porcellein is in the bin and mid century modern is what's hot now. The frisbees have made way for the non fungible tokens. But for those who watch their precious memories drift away on the winds of change, it is a rather sad episode to watch. estory
