An alternative take on My Favourite Things.

The Things I Like Best

by Terry Reilly

Watching the Scots beating England at Hampden,

Leaving a tube train which I had been jammed in,

Wearing my comfortable yellow string vest,

These are a few of the things I like best.

Cheering on racehorses winning at Ascot,

Sporting the smart necktie which I have just bought,

Glimpsing a mother bird guarding her nest,

These are a few of the things I like best.

When the ‘Gers win, when I’ve no gin, when I’m feeling low,

I simply remember the things I like best and then I feel good to go.

Wearing the Green when the Bhoys stuff the Light Blues,

Standing on top of Ben Nevis with clear views,

Telling a story, or making a jest

These are a few of the things I like best.

Bebop with Bird or smooth groovin' with Coltrane,

Sailing a dinghy or flying in a jet plane,

Thanking the DJ for playing my request,

These are a few of the things I like best.

At a dull bash, having no cash, when I’m on my knees,

I simply remember the things I like best and then life becomes a breeze.

Chilling with Jobim or jiving to Elvis,

Swaying the Samba or shaking my pelvis,

Saluting the medals on my father’s chest,

These are a few of the things I like best.

Visiting the Prado and marvelling at Goya,

Hang-gliding over the cliffs at La Jolla,

Praising my daughter for passing her test,

These are a few of the things I like best.

New Lyrics writing prompt entry
Writing Prompt
Take a well-known song and replace the original rhyming lyrics with your own. Rhyming is required, the original meter should be preserved, but no other restrictions apply.
However, to avoid copyright infringement, create a new, similar, title which unmistakably references the original.
For example: On The Street Where You Live might become On The Road Where You Dwell or Jailhouse Rock might become Prison Jive.

Hampden: Scotland*s national football (soccer) stadium.
The other soccer references relate to the deep rivalry between Glasgow Celtic (green, Bhoys) and Rangers (light blue, *Gers).
Ben Nevis is Scotland and the UK*s highest peak.
Pays one point and 2 member cents.
