Stakes were high
Boxing Night in Phuket
by Bruce Carrington
Two quick jabs, pow pow, followed by a hook to the liver. I pushed it right from my hip, turning my leg slightly to increase the momentum. My opponent, a hulking Thai, humiliated me by smiling.
We were in one of Phuket’s bars that organized Friday Thai boxing nights. Amateurs welcomed. Chairs and tables surrounded the elevated ring. Cheers from intoxicated natives and the salty smell of sweat filled the air.
The stakes were high. I win this fight, I win the case of free beer, were my last thoughts before waking up in the hospital with a severe concussion.
