Growing up in the country

Growing g up country

by bonespur

Growing up country
My real childhood, at least , what I can remember
Was with my step father, a bonafide cowboy,
I grew up on a 14,000 acre cattle ranch
My favorite horse, and my dog, were my greatest toys.
I was schooled in hard work, and perseverance
And I got paid every night at the dinner table
I pretty much got everything I ever wanted
A no nonsense approach kept me ready and able.
I worked hard to prove myself
And somehow make my father proud of me
Although I would never actually hear it
I know he was proud of the “tomboy” he made of me
I wouldn’t change my childhood for anything
It’s the reason, I’m who I am, today
I feel blessed God chose this particular childhood for myself
It was a gift from above, as daddy would say
