Not Wild About Only Child

by Reese Turner

Not that I’m bent out of shape about it
But, fact is, birth gypped this baby boy:
I was the first and I was also the last
And being an only child ain’t a real joy!

Oh, sure, people say I got all the toys
At Christmas, all the eggs at Easter, too.
Got all the attention of loving parents…
I’ll admit some of that may be true.

But, there are some real downsides to
Being the #1, as in, the #1 and only.
Rainy days, in winter cold, on a trip
It’s no fun to play alone, in fact, it’s lonely.

And on those occasions when my demeanor
Was not so hot, when I failed to behave
I was outnumbered by two mad parents.
And, with household chores, I was a slave.

Yardwork was even worse. It was always my
Turn to mow, rake and hoe, take out trash.
So, ain’t all fun when you’re the only one, but,
I'll admit, at the end, there was more cash!
