Simple poem about indulgence and restraint

Demon

by Lilly Desdemona

A gentle and melodic voice wisped through the air,

But not a drip of malice hung from her lips,

Not hatred or evil, rather requests she found fair.

An offering, rather small, of mutual partnerships.

She would linger as she pleased, ever present,

Stilling trembling hand and cleansing unease.

In return, within my mind she would take rent.

Her luggage packed, awaiting under the marquise.

Not without sin and not without holiness,

We resided somewhere between the two extremes,

With her by my side, gone were days of loneliness,

A saccharine existence floating in endless dream.

For her lessons of humility and sacrifice of self,

But, in me she instilled self loving and pleasure.

Even a faded ego deserves drink from a higher shelf.

Her own ego cracked, realizing heart’s true treasure.

Just as self loathing turn to love, malice melts away,

We strive towards betterment, hand in hand,

A mutual cure for each other's steady decay.

Together, far greater than either planned.

Temporary would become forever as we join,

Never apart, now two sides of the same coin,

Each of them acting as the others quoin,

Not true love, yet the with other’s hearts we purloin.

A poem written a short time ago, reminiscent of friendships and becoming myself as I am today.
