Midnight Ride

Claire counted twelve clock chimes as she reread the ransom note: "Deliver the money to the train station at midnight."
Her pale, trembling hands clenched the suitcase as she slipped through the damp, deserted alleyways. At the bustling train station, thousands of passengers waited, oblivious.
A voice called from the shadows, "Leave the suitcase and board."
With tiny beads of sweat on her forehead, Claire obeyed. She watched as a dark figure snatched the suitcase and vanished.
Haunting memories of her military demolition days flooded back as she closed her eyes, said a prayer for forgiveness, and pressed the detonator.
