Two Fairies and the Baby

by HarryT

Lizzy, a pretty baby with a peachy glow, and downy wisps of blonde hair seemed to cry every waking minute. Her mother, Sara, was exhausted, and suffered from postpartum depression. She refused to pick Lizzy up when she cried. Instead, she would leave the house.

A flowing magnolia tree grew next to the nursery window, which was left open. Two tiny, shimmering figures flitted down from pink flowers. Fiona and Kate, twin fairies with wings like rainbows and flowing hair that sparkled in the sunlight, fluttered into the nursery. They both agreed that humans were often loud, but this tiny human’s cries were filled with distress, which they couldn’t ignore.

They hovered and peeked into the crib. Lizzy’s eyes filled with hope when she saw them. Kate flew back out the window and gathered a dewdrop from a magnolia flower. She placed the dewdrop on Lizzy’s lips. The baby stopped crying and her face lit up with a smile. Above the crib, Fiona and Kate swayed singing a soft melody.

Then Fiona flew outside and found Sara crying in the backyard. Fiona fluttered near her face and flew toward the house. Sara followed Fiona into the nursery where Lizzy cooed. Sara picked her up and cuddled Lizzy affectionately for the first time. Fiona and Kate circled, wishing a bond to be formed. They smiled when they saw that both Sara and Lizzy’s eyes bubbled with delight.

The fairies smiled and fluttered out the window and back to their magnolia tree. For seven days, Fiona and Kate returned in the evening softly soothing Lizzy with a lullaby until the baby fell into a peaceful sleep. When they were assured, love flowed between mother and baby, they left to work their magic on others in need.
