Turned down for the prom, but...
Next Best Thing

Jonathan clutched a long stem rose, stomach in knots. Susie was by her locker, wearing her cheerleader outfit.
"Hi Susie," he whispered, “How bout prom?” His hand shaking, holding a long stem rose.
"Oh, Jon, that's sweet. But I'm going with Harry."
Jon faced flushed bright red. He pulled the rose back. "Oh, I should have known, the quarterback.”
Susie squeezed his arm, “I’m sorry.”
Jon nodded, a lump forming in his throat and managed to say, “At least take the rose.”
Susie said, “Thank you. Ask me for a date.”
“How about next Saturday?”
“I’d like that.” Susie said.
