A free form verse on competition

I Could Go On

by Bryce 1

I used to think competition was negative
Bad
Egoic
Childish
Silly
Pointless
To be pitted against someone else to see who is better
Worthy
Superior
Faster
Smarter
Stronger
All the commotion that leaves another feeling smaller
Sadder
Bitter
Fearful
Lonely
Defeated
But one day I was given a new point of view
A new angle
A different assesment
I might have been wrong
It might be a good thing
A great thing
A very powerful tool
Competition is not finding out who is better and who is worse
Good and bad
Winner and loser
Worthy or not
Competition occurs between two people who want to become better
There does not have to be anything sad about loss
Loss is an arrow pointing forward
Not a stop sign with bad news
They want to get better and competiton makes them better
It is a positive thing
Competition evolves the good into the great into the legend
All great legends preach that loss is the key to gain
They embrace competition and take loss not as a signal of defeat
Unworthiness
Proof of deficiency
They take it as a win in their effort to become who they want to be
Competition
Inspires
Evolution
I risk each word in this writing contest I place myself in now
I risk my whole self image as a writer
If I lose, am I still a writer?
The answer is yes
Only if
I continue writing
And striving
And never accept
Defeat

Writing Prompt
Write a free verse poem on competition. Tell what it means to be competitive and why you love competition or not. Free verse is a form of poetry that does not necessarily follow to any specific meter patterns, rhyme, or any other pattern. Free verse, despite its freedom, often still has some elements of form. Most free verse does observe a convention of lines and structure. No rhyming patterns.
