A Day in the Life

by gansach

What A Mess! Contest Winner
The day is full of many chores
when you're a single mom~
The cleaning, cooking, bills to pay,
and much to stress upon~
A job, child care, and so much more,
some time to play and romp~
So much responsibility,
less circumstance and pomp.
The day began quite typic'ly,
my child quietly at play~
While I took on the list of tasks
I had to do today~
The silence rang a warning bell
I've learned to not ignore~
The toilet paper roll, unwound,
was spread across the floor.
We cleaned it up and I returned
to jobs I had to do~
But, once again, that warning said
to go and check anew~
The cereal was in her lap,
the box was in her arms~
The smile was on her face as she
picked out all of the Charms.
Another mess to be swept up
and thrown away at last~
"What next?" I said and shook my head.
I should learn not to ask~
For next, she climbed the bathroom sink,
found my trusty razor~
So she could be like Mom, she said,
tried it out to shave her.
We wiped the graze and cleaned the blood
and added a bandaid~
I sat her down to read her book.
"Just, please, stay there," I prayed~
The next I knew, my poor gray cat
was talcumed head to tail~
"Kitty's pretty!" my angel smiled,
a whiter shade of pale*.

Our dinner done, pajamas on,
it's time to forget stress~
We say our prayers and ask the Lord,
"Please, God, just bless this mess!"
