At The Base of Great Cake: Icing

by Reese Turner

You’ve surely heard, “That’s the icing on the cake.”
Well, ‘tis the icing that the difference do make!
Why do you suppose that saying so long survives?
Because, it’s the icing, by taste and sight, in our eyes.
For example: Don’t men swoon at a lady’s mere sight?
Seeing only her icing yet thinking, “such a delight!”
Icing dresses up, struts her stuff; Colors, flowers, more!
Cake just puffs up flour, eggs, milk. Ain’t that a bore?
Base “cake” is merely flour and milk beat into a batter
Might hold a hint of flavor, but doesn’t really matter.
Strolling down the dessert line, looking for a treat?
You see a max-icinged cake, say, “Oh, I just must eat!”
Sure, fine base cake blends, indeed, praises do I shout,
But icings, sweetly winking? That’s what I’m talkin’ about!
