A chapter in the book Endangered Animals

California Condor

by tempeste

Native Indians call them thunderbolts,
they believe their huge black wings
produce claps when they flap

After habitat loss, lead colic
is the biggest culprit
for bringing this prehistoric
looking giant on the brink
of extinction.

The poisoning occurs when it
consumes wildlife targeted
and killed by bullets.

It won't win any beauty contest
but we need our feathered ally
to carry on eating carrion
to stop deadly diseases from speading.

Thanks to the San Diego Zoo
recovery program,
the magestic Condor
soars once again in the wild
there and yonder.
