Rhymed poem about Utah mustang horses

Mustangs by Design

by CrystieCookie999

Their gait is straight and striking, 'til the strongest lead mustang

will snort and scream a call to all his herd to halt for now.

Where Utah's Cedar Mountains meet the grasslands to the west

within Tooele County, where the mustangs know just how

to live out in the wilds of nature, they'll persist, survive.

What range of colors for the mustang herd—all shades of brown,

and even grays and whites, or palominos, pintos, too.

They are a famous sight, attracting tourists to the town.

The Bureau of Land Management refills such water troughs

as any horse will need to drink—no parasites to fear

as they may find in muddy water holes if left alone,

and which would shorten mustangs’ lives, if left untreated here.

For equine therapy, the mustangs teach new skills to teens:

to get a halter on a horse requires that trust exist,

to lead the horse—another level, walking willingly.

These mustangs sense the feelings of the teens and may resist.

So teens will learn their feelings and their doubts affect their lives,

when mustangs are the partners rather than psychiatrists.

These horses may share friendship, after trust is slowly earned,

and help to form new memories, that teens can build upon.

Whatever obstacles that may have blocked success before

become less emphasized, since horse and human have a bond,

with boundaries, communication, gentling former trends.

These horses bring the nineteenth century to modern friends.

This two-stanza poem is written in loose iambic heptameter with end rhymes on alternate lines, ending with a rhymed couplet. Tooele is both a county and a town in the state of Utah, in the United States of America. Tooele is pronounced "Too-illa" with an accent on the second syllable. It would rhyme nearly with the word "vanilla." The Cedar Mountain area is near or in the Onaqui Mountain range. The next closest mountain range is the Oquirrh Mountains, which are on the west side of the Salt Lake Valley.
