Growing old amid the song of my life

Singing My Song

by Verna Cole Mitchell

The thought when young, “I’ll not grow old,” was wrong,

For age has slipped upon me silently.

Although I haven’t finished with my song,

I’m wondering what lyrics wait for me.

To reach so soon the winter season tune

Has caught me in the meantime by surprise.

To know if benediction’s late or soon,

I do not know nor even can surmise.

But now I still can hum contentedly,

Despite the notes that wavered in their sadness,

For love of God and my dear family

Have made a wondrous melody of gladness.

I’ll seek to sing my song with God’s good favor

Until it’s time for me to meet my Savior.
