The Explosion

by Dean Elliott

The Explosion

It happened one morning in the middle of June,
when the world was still quiet and calm.
I was thrown out of bed by a thumping so loud
it had to be caused by a bomb.
So I rolled under the bed where I thought I'd be safe,
and I stayed there 'til late afternoon.
I didn't want something, whatever it was,
to harm me if I came out too soon.
I spent the time wondering, What in the world
could have possibly made such a sound?
Maybe a space ship from some other planet
was shot down and fell to the ground.
There were little green people all running for cover
and soon they would come to my door.
They'd search and they'd find me hiding under the bed
and I'd be the first prisoner of war.
Or maybe, just maybe, it was one of our ships
that ran out of fuel and came down.
The noise was so loud, there can't be much left
just a big hole in the ground.
How about a meteor, it could have been that,
and the dust has now blocked out the sun.
It would be dark for years, some species won't make it
and maybe we humans are done.
But I woke up much later, still tucked in my bed.
It seems the whole thing was a dream.
So since I was safe I got up and got dressed,
went out the door and I screamed!
There was a big gaping hole right in the driveway
and my car was nothing but junk.
All that was left of my car, which was flattened,
was a whisp of blue smoke from the trunk.
I never found out what had caused the explosion,
but one thing I have to tell you,
If you think that you're safe when you're sound asleep dreaming,
I know for a fact that's not true.
