Held God's Honor above His Own

Eric Liddell, Runner For God

by jim vecchio

God honors he who honors Him
His chances might have been so slim

Proved above sport, he loved God more
In Olympics, 1924

A great runner, remembered well
Is the man named Eric Liddell
With Esther, God used her beauty
Eric saw running, his duty

Liddell honored God till his last
For he knew that God made him fast
Thoughts of himself, he would bury
-His earthly work, missionary

He took a stand for God one day
Refusing to run on Sunday
Paris Olympics was the place
Another date, he would embrace

He played rugby, studied science
With his brother had alliance
A famous pair is what they were
At their college in Edinburgh

His true work, always in China
Teaching of God, no one finer
God truly made him an athlete
Honoring God made him complete

The movie, "Chariots Of Fire" has the most iconic movie theme since "Gone With The Wind". It basically tells the story of the 1924 Olympics, and focuses on two individuals: Harold Abrahams and Eric Liddell. Abrahams was fast, but ran for his own ego. When he won, it was a hollow victory. Liddell was fast and ran for God's glory, refusing to participate on The Lord's Day. His Victory honored God, and he joined his family as a missionary to China
