Young man finds the truth.
The Gate
by Gunner Lil
The blast was humongous and it picked me up and threw
me across a dirt road where I landed face down in a field of tall grass.
I blinked several times and stayed completely still for several moments before
I rolled onto my back and checked my body parts and found them to be intact.
The clean aroma coming from the tall, green grass was a pleasant substitute for
the smell of diesel fuel and exhaust that I had been sucking into my lungs for the
last three months. I pushed myself into a sitting position and discovered my weapon was gone and I was alone.
It was scary quiet. I got to my feet to survey the field before me. Within fifty yards
to my north was a solid bright object surrounded by what I thought it to be, a vibrant rainbow. I started on my short journey to inspect it.
I reached the area from where the colors radiated and saw a huge white door covered
with rubies, emeralds, and diamonds. I heard relaxing music being played by Enigma.
I wanted in. I pounded on the colossal door. From the other side a deep authoritative
voice asked, "Who goes there?"
I shouted out my name, rank, and service number.
The door slowly opened and standing at attention before a gate made of pearls were
two Marines in dress blues.
At that moment I realized Marines do guard Heaven's Pearly Gates.
