The Balm

by mortman

A most pleasant task was offered to me, from my truest and best friend Kirk.

Please mind my beautiful wife, he said, while I’m away for work.

He trusted me while business called, to keep Peg safe and sound,

He’d reward me when returning home, with delights not locally found.

I jumped at the chance given by my friend, without any hesitation or fear,

The sad truth was, I hate to say, an awful fact to hear.

You see, despite my guilt and endless angst, my love for Peg had grown,

And not in the way that Kirk would like, our seeds of lust were sown.

The month went by and our love grew stronger, like a beautiful dream that lingers,

But all things must end and I took her hands, and caressed her gentle fingers.

We must move on and end our love, I said with tear-filled sorrow,

For Kirk will be back, and we’ll have to return to our old lives by tomorrow.

With a dubious smile and placid demeanor, Peg greeted her husband with feeling,

Hoping like hell throughout an embrace, he would miss the truth she’s concealing.

It’s good to be back, I’ve missed you my love, he professed with unusual calm,

Now where is my friend so I can reward him with this, a new and exciting balm.

I entered the room with a confident smile, but knowing I was bound for hell,

I’m so glad you were here my friend, he proclaimed, to keep my wife safe and well.

Please take this reward, you have earned for your trust, and he handed me a vial.

Just rub in the paste and all pain will depart, of that there can be no denial.

I made my way home, alone and distraught, my longing for Peg enduring,

Then a sudden thought did come to mind, an idea most alluring.

To ease my pain, I’ll use all the balm, my friend was so generous in giving,

And that, my friends, is my last thought on earth, as now I’m no longer living.
