Working On The Railroad

by jim vecchio

I’ve been working on the railroad
all along the way
From Milford to NYC*
on the NY, NH &H*

People sing about the Illinois Central*
from Chicago to New Orleans
No one sings of Connecticut
and the daily commuter runs

We need a singer like Arlo Guthrie
or even Arthur Godfrey
All we have is the same trainload
of commuters and wannabes

Teachers coming from small cities
Writers seeking their fame
Families going sight-seeing
Drinkers seeking new bars

Children crying from the club car
While their daddies enjoy a sip
Salesmen that are going nowhere
Performers seeking a break

From New Haven to Milford
to Stratford to Bridgeport
All the live-long day
Fairfield to Norwalk
piling on passengers at each stop

Norwalk to Stamford
Stamford to Greenwich
Then past 110th street
to our destination,
Grand Central Station

The cars are emptied
The conductor’s done well
Arrival is on time
Dinah ring your bell!
