Sweetness Overload

by Claire Tennant

Tablets are things we take to alleviate symptoms, are they not? It reminds me of a time when my friend visited me. She complained of a headache. I asked if she wanted Panadol.
Her response had me giggling.
"Thank you, a sensible suggestion." Unlike her dear partner, who said, "Can you not take a tablet or something?" Her response then was, "What do you suggest, the tablets at Mount Sinai?" History tells us that Moses received the Ten Commandments in tablet form from God.

The Scots have another variety of tablet. It is a thing diabetics should avoid, and the rest of us should not eat too much of. It is a sweet confection. My brother can make it, Mum could make it, my grandparents could make it. I can eat it! It is made of sugar, condensed milk and butter, boiled and stirred until it crystalises, to cool on a tray. When Tom and I were married, we gave the guests tablet; you can get sugared almonds anywhere. It was a great success. Sadly, I do not have the courage to make it; such would be the disappointment if it failed. Interested? Please refer to Mr. Google.
