This world can’t fix my lonely burdened heart

The list of mankind’s woes is far from brief

When people fight and worlds are torn apart

It feels like life is hardly worth the grief

Something lost writing prompt entry

Writing Prompt
Write a rhyming poem about something you have lost - not someone.

This poem explores the loss of connectedness, safety and peace. It first began to take shape years ago and I've updated it for this contest. Recent world events make it feel relevant again, unfortunately. Please understand that I'm writing in character rather than as myself, so the despair contained within is purely a way to explore the theme. I'm okay, and I hope you are, too.

This poem is in pantoum form. The pantoum consists of quatrains with an abab rhyme scheme and lines of eight-twelve syllables. The second and fourth lines of each stanza serve as the first and third lines of the next, and the last line of a pantoum is often the same as the first. I've chosen to write this one in iambic pentameter.
