An explanation about the Melbourne Cup Day. I'm not a fan.
It's November
by Claire Tennant
When we talk about cups, I think of China. Delicate, floral printed, designed for afternoon tea, where friends talk and stuff their faces with gossip and cake.
Not Melbourne, where the elite or the "striving to be better" gather for a horse race or several. For a price, the alcohol and food are consumed. The ladies don beautiful dresses, hats, and pretty, as opposed to functional, shoes.
At 3.00 p.m., the country stops. A commentator advises the names and placing of the horses and the best jockey. It is over in minutes, but the celebrations continue. I think, "Whoopee do!"
