Rocking Horse and Rocking Chair

by Barry Penfold

Rocking horse years
And babyhood tears
Toy soldiers without any heads
Trolleys and trains
Puzzles and planes
Marbles and beads without threads.

The first day at school
And teacher with a rule
And chanting your many times table
And once in a year
When Christmas was near
You modelled the child in the stable.

Stockings were hung
And carols were sung
All kinds of family meetings
Bells on the tree
Chains hanging free
The cards with their seasonal greetings.

The happy times
With those pantomimes
The circuses,zoos and the fairs
The seaside and sun
The parties and fun
Sand Castles and musical chairs

For those childhood pleasures
Old age fondly treasures
And one thing in common they share
Those rocking horse days
To cherish always
From the seat of the rocking chair.

Rocking Chairs are of different types. For the young it is the adventure of a rocking horse. For the elder adult it is a rocking chair, a place of security and pleasant memories.
