Absent Father

I saw you in my dream last night.

It's been I don't even know how many years.

I almost never even think of you anymore.

But you were there, and I told you things I've never said.

How much you hurt us.

How we had to struggle for years with the scars left behind from what you did.

I told you I didn't know if I could ever fully forgive you.

I saw you last night, and told you I understand.

You did the best you could.

You had your own demons, so many battles lost.

Pain you didn't know how to heal.

But you still hurt us.

My brother finally got to ask for THE apology.

The one we've both needed since we were six and eight years old.

We hugged you and cried.

I showed you all of the pictures of the life you've missed with us.

I will never really see you.

But seeing you in my dream last night...

That was enough.
