There's a legend 'bout the Falks Woods,
that is told year after year.
Of a devil dog who lives there,
who makes people disappear.
Mary left her best friend's party,
so much later than she thought.
A cold Autumn wind blew harder,
so she donned the coat she'd brought.
Though the moon provided some light
and her house was short a walk,
she would pass Falks Woods at nighttime,
and there'd always been some talk...
Of people who once wandered in,
as shadows filled its spaces
and never seen again they say,
dragged off to deep dark places.
Mary quickened up her slow pace,
to her horror...she could hear,
the sound of shuffling feet approach,
moving faster, drawing near.
Young Mary fled into Falks Woods,
there was crashing close behind.
She stood her ground and faced it,
knowing not what she would find.
An animal quite large and black,
half in shadows, half in light.
Red eyes stared right into her soul,
on that cold and fearsome night.
Then oddly, it began to speak,
there was much it had to say.
He was so lonely in his woods,
no one came at night to play.
Mary always had a soft spot
for all lost and lonely ones,
and animals especially,
always made her come undone.
Mary took pity on the dog,
reaching out a steady hand.
She didn't fear this devil dog
and said, "I understand".
She promised that she'd come and play,
in the Falks Woods every night.
If he'd swear he'd scare no other,
for the Devil's sole delight.
Now Falks Woods is always quiet,
save for laughter you can hear.
For the devil dog is happy,
and there's nothing left to fear.
Mary makes her way to Falks Woods,
where her puppy waits to play.
Half in shadows, half in moonlight,
as the two both make their way.
