The Squirrels That Got Away

by John Cranford

One winter morn in the attic above,
A squirrel found a place as warm as a glove.

He made them a home...his girls and his boys.
And through all of this, I heard a strange noise.

So from my bed, I quickly took flight,
Trying to find what had shattered my night.

When I reached the attic, what did I see?
An assortment of eyes looking at me.

As you might expect, confusion ensued.
I lost my balance and things came unglued.

I punched a hole in the ceiling that day.
While all the squirrels made a clean get away.

My son was below asleep in his bed,
With ceiling debris all over his head.

His eyes popped open and to my dismay,
While I peered through the hole...what could I say?

He looked like a ghost all covered in stuff.
I smiled and said, "Son...are you warm enough?"
