It Hurts Just Thinking About It

by Verna Cole Mitchell

I can't believe I ate all that -
Just filled with calories and fat.

With onion rings did I begin
And spicy sauce to dip them in.

My fresh green salad, I'm confessing,
Had croutons crowned with blue-cheese dressing.

Of chicken soup, I had a bowl,
Along with soft white dinner roll.

With pork ribs, honey barbecued,
Were apples with brown sugar stewed.

The French fries were a crisp delight,
Their cheddar topping, "outta sight."

I ate no green beans, corn, or peas,
Sans salt, sans seasoning, sans cheese.

But there were vegetables sautéed,
In cream and butter, I'm afraid.

Dessert time I just had to try
Both cheesecake and some pecan pie.

I topped it all with almond coffee
And caramel and chocolate toffee.

Ohhh, how I had a stomach ache. . .
Till suddenly did I awake.

I'd dreamed my dinner, rich foods packed,
My diet started, still intact.
