Hymnbooks change to screens.

Where Did They Go?

by Verna Cole Mitchell

On one Sunday they were right there,
Convenient for all to use,
And then on the next, they were gone -
The hymnbooks on backs of the pews.

I loved those old hymns that we sang,
The same ones I'd sung through the years,
With meanings of some so profound,
I'd find myself often in tears.

And standing there closely beside me,
My husband would share half the book.
Together we'd lift up our voices,
And sometimes we'd share a sweet look.

But now in the front of the church
Are words written large on a screen,
Where when I'm behind someone tall,
I lean right and left so they're seen.

I still miss those hymnbooks of yore.
It's hard with familiar to part.
Still as I sing new songs today,
I'll worship with all of my heart.
