Misfortune

by Boogienights

A child on the corner stands,
a woman in a threadbare dress.
A cardboard sign is in her hands,
-HUNGRY- it reads, they're in distress.

The passersby just look away,
A car stops, but most often not.
The woman to them, makes her way,
they pass her coins, but not a lot.

The little girl with tangled hair,
waits for her mother patiently.
She doesn't see how people stare,
she only knows that she's hungry.

Has our humanity long fled?
Does anybody care at all?
To help the hungry to be fed,
to lift them up whene'er they fall?

Just one or two will never do,
we all must play our part, you see.
To help the homeless make it through,
and from their wretched life, be free.

The woman and the child leave,
the folded sign is put away.
So grateful for what they receive,
they'll be back at the light of day.
