Cooking Buddies

by Michelle D. Carr

It was May of nineteen seventy-two

and love beads were replaced by apron strings.

I saw you first that summer afternoon

and plunged the depths of your wisdom.

As I imagined the tastes of you

and delved into your many portions

I knew I would always keep you by my side.

We traveled together halfway around the world and back.

I’ve seen others that have been more exotic and expensive,

but I could never give you up for another.

We have both faded but are none the worse for wear.

As we continue and find meaning in our usefulness,

I smile with every adventurous page I turn.

My faithful companion of fifty years…

my Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook.
