An irony about writing

The Would-be Writer

by Verna Cole Mitchell

Just listen while I talk to you
About my great new plan.
You're going to be so proud of me.
You'll be my biggest fan.

I've never tried to write before,
But I'm convinced I can.
You'll see I've written something great
When you see me again.

I do not need a writing class.
I'm ready to jump in.
For sure, I'll be a huge success.
Such prizes will I win!

On research I won't waste my time.
Who cares about the past?
I'll make the facts up as I write,
From first word to the last.

I don't know many grammar rules
For proper use and such.
If punctuation's not correct,
It will not matter much.

Some folks have tried to caution me.
They say to start out slow.
I answer them, "That's not my style,"
As hurrying I go.

For patience, practice, process, too,
I have no earthly use.
And if I skip a step or two,
I will not make excuse.

You'll get to see my quick success
As writer of renown.
With interviews upon TV,
I'll be "toast of the town."
