Forgive Anyway

by Jessica Wheeler

It's time that I regain control
For I have given you too much
The past will take an endless toll
If I don't break free from its clutch

A hopeless plea, you will not get
A little girl, I did not stay
You let me down with no regret
And I'll forgive you anyway.

The stand I needed you to take
You never cared enough to give
There's nothing more for you to break
And I don't need your love to live

From what you chose, I choose to heal
Your unsaid words will have no say
I'll grant you what you cannot steal
And I'll forgive you anyway.

The hits I took, not by your hand
But never did you once protect
I only hope you understand
The hardest hit was your neglect

What's done is done; I can't undo
But I won't waste another day
The peace I make won't come from you
And I'll forgive you anyway.
