Holly Jolly Food Bank

by Regina Elliott

My days volunteering in the salvage
area of the local food bank was quite
positive and rewarding for me. I met
mostly kind people. Some of them
were senior citizens very dedicated
to their volunteer jobs. Some were
younger parents giving time on the
break to help out. Hunger relief has
been my focus for a long time.

    The Christmas holiday season was
here. Artificial holly garlands and
table top Christmas trees made the
atmosphere even more cheery.  We
worked while we engaged each other
in conversation. My jingle bell
earrings, besides looking festive,
sounded just like sleigh bells.

I was having the time of my life.
We were all singing to Yuletide
music. There were also many
schoolchildren giving a hand.
At the volunteer luncheon the
next day, we all had such
splendid camaraderie. We knew
the mission of the food bank was
so vital and important. Back then
in the 1990's there were so many
hungry people in our region.
It's gotten much worse in the
past few years.

I felt so much purpose and
altruism that special Christmastide.
We drank Cheerwine holiday punch.
We would exchange past Christmas
memories and good will with each
other. The salvage coordinator
staff member was a woman in her
forties. On some days I would work
closely with her inspecting food
and drink packages, making sure
they were safe for the hungry
members of our community.

It was impressive to see besides
non-perishable food, fresh produce
come in from some of the area
farms and home gardens the
previous summer  I was still
taking it all in, it was one of the
best experiences of my life to
give some time there. Although
it's been awhile since that
holly jolly food bank wondrous
experience, I now donate to an
Episcopal church pantry much
closer to me. I'm 66, and my
knees are very arthritic these
days. I walk with two canes.
I wish I could help out with
this pantry, but I'm not
physically able to. I do my
best to donate items such as
baby food or cereal. I still
feel the call coming to me
from my loving Christ's
heart.

I had the time of my life
volunteering for the
"Holly Jolly Food Bank" that
most wondrous Christmastide
all those years ago. ~
