Reliving the past in order to see the way forward.

In Retrospect

by BethShelby

I need to find a quiet place
to set my spirit free,
to travel back to yesteryear,
with wisdom guiding me.

I’ll rethink things, I once thought wise.
Naivety of youth
will charge ahead unmindful of
reality of truth.

Exploring life in retrospect
may hidden flaws reveal,
and seeing misdeeds I have done,
might help my heart to heal.

If I can’t learn from past mistakes,
it’s likely they’ll repeat,
and precious moments lived again,
will make me feel complete.

It’s not my goal to hold my past
more closely than today,
allowing all the lesson learned
to guide me on my way.

I’ll seek to focus on my goals,
examining their source,
and if they’re worth pursuing, still,
go forward on my course.

I think that time has mellowed me,
but yet, I’ve things to do.
Though I can’t travel at top speed,
I’m sure, I’m not quite through.

I won't regret remembering
the way the years have flown.
I did not choose who I would be,
nor did I walk alone.
