What's the use of Crying

Smile

by Janet Foor

The songs we sing ourselves at night
while all around us sleep.
Like echoes of a melody
and promises to keep.

Sometimes the songs will bring a smile
with joyful times replayed.
And other times a soulful tear --
a solemn cavalcade.

A mem'ry of a lullaby --
sweet sounds of sheer delight
reverberate across my mind
and cradle me at night.

I ramble through my ancient house
and stop by ev'ry door.
I climb the stairs and say a prayer --
my breaking heart restore.

My pillow drenched with woeful tears
could fill an ocean wide.
I'd like to travel back in time,
a chance to turn the tide.

Tonight, my songs are bittersweet --
these tunes from long ago.
My guitar strikes a somber chord
and strums it soft and low.

Before the sun begins to rise
I'll dry my tears away.
And thank the one who gave me breath--
and smile another day.

"Smile" is one of my favorite Nat King Cole songs. Some days it makes me smile and some days I pray for the sun to come out reminding me that life is all worthwhile. Thank you for reading.

Smile
Smile, though your heart is aching
Smile, even though it's breaking
When there are clouds in the sky, you'll get by
If you smile through your fear and sorrow
Smile, and maybe tomorrow
You'll see the sun come shining through for you
Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness
Although a tear may be ever so near
That's the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what's the use of crying?
You'll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just smile
