Putting her foot down. (200 word story)
The Test Drive
by LisaMay
“It’s so very different to my old manual car! What’s this little knob do? The gear lever? Oh, it’s an automatic. And what’s that thing? A reversing camera? I’ve never used one.”
These were 70-year-old Cathy’s comments when she first sat behind the wheel of the car which she was about to take for a test drive. The young man selling the car sat beside her. Cathy’s best friend’s husband was in the back seat. He’d offered to check the car over. They showed their lack of faith in Cathy’s driving ability when both said simultaneously: “Would you like one of us to reverse the car out of the driveway?”
Most people probably think themselves to be better drivers than they actually are, but Cathy was a competent driver and their words felt condescending and stung her. Declining their offers, she put the car in gear and pressed the accelerator pedal.
Her thirty-year-old car had needed quite a bit of pressure before it responded, but this newer one’s accelerator was much lighter. The car shot backwards down the long driveway. Thank heavens it was straight! Three loud sighs of relief were heard when the car arrived safely at the street.
