Touchstone

by Jessica Wheeler

Weighted dark stone

Skipped just on the surface

Abandoned, unknown

Cascading, no purpose

Magnet lure of the sand

With concealing intentions

Overthrown by your hand

Demanding my redemption

Haul me past the resistance

Lighten up my dark surface

More buoyant with distance

It is you; you're my purpose

Explore past this shell

Reveal all that's been hiding

When faced with my protest,

Test and stay beside me

Maintain what you've shown

Trust in the temporary

Though such heavy a stone

You've enlisted to carry

Let me live in your wisdom

For I fear what's beneath me

I beg you not to question

I plead for you to keep me

Storm by storm, hit by hit

Avalanches of boulders

Falling fast down upon us

And landing on your shoulders

Shielding me from their aim

One more crack, I’d be dust

You were never to blame

You are all that I trust

If ever you sent me back

Skipped me clear across the sea

I'd succumb to the black

Just a stone, I would be

I'd give in to the ocean

To the sand, I'd surrender

I'd harden without you

My heart’s only contender

But if you turn the tide

Like the sun, sure and sturdy

Pull me in and I'll thrive

Like the moon, I'll be worthy

For you are my touchstone

All I've known to be true

And I, merely gravel

If ever without you
