Thoughts Before Surgery

by Tom Horonzy

Should I fear death knowing
it is the required means
to end the life I'm living,
so I can begin to live anew
an unimaginable existence?

The answer is; it depends.
Did I plan accordingly to live life
minding my p's and q's by
following God's commands?
Did I keep the covenants
pre-mortality made to gain
an earthly body, or did I
do as I pleased, decreasing
the possibility of returning
to God's presence?

Too late now to make amends.
Whatever will be, shall be.
I need to wait and see
what exactly becomes of me
physically following surgery.

Will I be here tomorrow?
If yes, I promise, dear Lord,
to amend past wrongs while
avoiding my past mistakes
in whatever time you provide,
increasing the hope, you will
welcome me home, where
I could kneel to express
my love before you.

Well, the time to go is here.
My gurney has arrived, and
the impact of nitrous oxide
has begun to take effect.
I trust to be in good hands,
medically speaking, yet
I ask you to stand beside them
to guide them professionally
to correct what has gone bad.
Graciously yours always.
