Equine Dignity

by Regina Elliott

Hello, my name is Secretariat. Many
of you humans may remember me.
I once was king of the horse racing
world. My big heart gave me so much
stamina, it weighed 22 lbs. I thundered
down the race tracks with my nostrils
flared, my sweat foaming all over my
reddish-brown coat with white socks
and a diamond white blaze on my
head. My nickname was, "Big Red."

My jockey, Ron Turcotte, was my
rider. He would be so full of adrenaline
like me that electrified us both. My
owner, Penny Chenery, was genteel
with class. My groom, Eddie Sweat,
was the best groom in the world.
I always looked forward to seeing
him walk up to my stall in the
violet dawn. I cherished
running, and I won the Triple Crown.
I won the Belmont Stakes by 31 lengths.
When the victory flowers were
placed around my neck, even my
trainer Lucien Laurin was misty!

I was retired to stud at Claiborne
Farm in Kentucky in November 1973.
Dear readers, another equine is about
to greet you. There's so many equines
here that have also crossed over the
colorful Rainbow Bridge. I have a
snowy-white miniature horse
companion here, Snow Princess.
On Earth, she was a therapy horse.
We horses have our forever dignity
grazing in Heaven's buttercup
pastures. There are dogs, cats,
birds, hamsters, Guinea pigs,
turtles, and so many other species.
God's lovely angels sing of His
love for humankind and us in
the animal kingdom.

We horses of all different sizes,
from the miniatures on up to
the mighty draft horses have
served and benefited humankind
for many centuries. Even carousel
and rocking horses have delighted
children for generations. Some of
us were war horses serving
alongside our soldiers. Now, we're
free, in paradise.

as a racing inspector for awhile.
She had an epiphany about
horse racing, and feels it is
inhumane. ~
